Executive Board
The Executive Board acts as the key consultative body within the University's management structure and provides a discussion forum for high-level strategic issues. It allows for the proper representation of faculties/ departments – in terms both of two-way communication and also of active consultation.
The Board is chaired by the Vice-Chancellor and has formal meetings five times a year. The Executive Board has 18 members and their details can be found below.
Professor Julius Weinberg – Vice-Chancellor
Under the Instrument and Articles of Government, Julius is the chief executive of Kingston University, responsible for:
- advising the Board of Governors on the education character and mission of the University; and
- the organisation, management and leadership of its staff.
He carries out these responsibilities with the advice of senior colleagues on the Senior Management Team, which has seven members, and with the consent of the Executive Board, on which all Deans and Heads of Department sit. He chairs both bodies.
Dr David Mackintosh – Deputy Vice-Chancellor
As Deputy Vice-Chancellor David's main responsibilities are to deputise for the Vice-Chancellor across a whole range of activities both in and outside the University; to act us a leading member of the University's senior management team and play a key role in developing and implementing its strategy; and to take lead resposibility for the academic affairs of the University.
Professor Martyn Jones – Pro Vice Chancellor (Academic Support and Student Services)
Martyn Jones has responsibility across the University for leading student and academic services, which includes:
- home and international recruitment;
- student services and administration;
- graduation events;
- alumni relations;
- student support services;
- international partnerships; and
- higher education/further education partnerships.
Mr Neil Latham – Pro Vice Chancellor (Corporate Affairs) and University Secretary
Neil has a portfolio of responsibilities which includes Communications, Human Resources, Estates (including the Campus Development Plan), Health and Safety, Legal Services, the University Secretary's Department, and Local and Regional Engagement. He is also a Director of a number of University companies. As Clerk to the Board of Governors he is responsible to the Chair for providing support and advice to the Board and its sub-committees. Additionally, Neil is sponsor for to several multi-disciplinary projects.
Professor Penny Sparke – Pro Vice-Chancellor (Research and Enterprise)
Penny has responsibility for research and enterprise across the University, which included the University's submission to the Research Assessment Exercise in 2008, and for the development of a longer-term research culture in the University. She also has responsibility for Cultural Strategy in the University, chairs the University Campus Development Board, is Director of the Modern Interior Design Centre, is a member of the Senior Management Team, and an attendee of the University Board of Governors.
Mr Bruce Armstrong – Director of Student Services and Administration
This department has staff based at various sites across the University. The department has responsibility for central student registry functions ie enquiries, admissions, enrolment, maintenance of student data on the university student administration system (known as SITS) and the production of relevant operational procedures. In addition, various student services are provided to enhance the student experience at Kingston.
Mr Martin Potter– Director of Finance
The role of Finance Director is to develop financial policy, strategy and procedures that ensure the probity of financial transactions and demonstrates the future financial viability of the University. Martin is also responsible for developing procurement policy strategy and procedures that achieve, for the University, value for money and the benefit of aggregate demand. Martin chairs the Risk Management Committee and the Value for Money Group.
Ms Alison Cahn – Director of Communications
Alison has been Director of Communications since October 2007. The role, which comes under the Pro Vice-Chancellor for Corporate Affairs, covers five teams with expertise in marketing and communications. The team's responsibilities include internal communications with staff, media relations, the University website and corporate branding, design and publications.
Mr Dean Morley – Director of Human Resources
Dean's role is to develop Kingston University's staffing strategies to secure the delivery of the University's Strategic Plan. Responsibilities include HR policy development; leadership and management; corporate training and development; payroll; and occupational health; plus diversity issues for all staff and students.
Mr Michael Hill – Director of Academic Development
Michael manages the University's Academic Development Centre (ADC). The ADC is a central department which offers a wide range of support and developmental activities across the University. The mission of the ADC is to support the staff of the University in all aspects of quality enhancement relating to learning and teaching, including quality assurance, staff development, learning and teaching strategies, educational technology and widening participation strategies.
Mrs Deborah Lock – Executive Director of Enterprise
The role of the Executive Director for Enterprise is to advise the University's Executive Board on internal and external developments in enterprise and to work with the senior managers on the development and effective delivery of the university's enterprise and employer engagement strategies. This includes raising the University's profile with employers, ensuring that the University is responding to knowledge transfer opportunities and leading the Enterprise Exchange.
Mr John Roberts – Head of Planning
John leads the Planning Office and manages the annual Planning Cycle within the University. The Planning Office has responsibility for student number planning and target setting within the University and the annual HESES return. The Planning Office also monitors franchised numbers with collaborative providers and facilitates the partnership between the University and partner further education colleges.
Mrs Marie Sheehan – Academic Registrar
The Academic Registry is responsible for supporting the Academic Board and its sub-committees, for maintaining the University's academic regulations and for overseeing academic policies and procedures. A core part of the department's work is supporting quality and standards in the University's academic provision, including collaborative provision. The department is also responsible for the administration of University examinations and for administering centrally-programmed teaching and meeting space. The Academic Registry also administers student academic appeals at the formal level.
Deans
Deans are members of the University Executive and the Academic Directorate. In that capacity they play an important role in the definition and development of University policy and in decision making at the highest level. Deans are also members of the Academic Board and other key University committees.
Their main responsibility is to provide academic leadership for the Faculty and to develop a strategy for the academic future of the Faculty and to strengthen the faculty's research base.
Deans also represent the Faculty and the University externally and raise Kingston's academic profile and strengthen links with key stakeholders.
