Lifelong Learning Networks

Kingston University is a member of the South London Lifelong Learning Network and the West London Lifelong Learning Network. We will deliver a number of their courses from September 2007.

What are Lifelong Learning Networks?

A Lifelong Learning Network is a group of institutions that come together to offer new progression opportunities for vocational learners across a city, area or region. They may include Higher Education institutions and Further Education colleges.

What is their mission?

Their mission is to develop additional activities, relationships and resources to increase the number of vocational learners progressing through Higher Education.

What are their aims?

Lifelong Learning Networks aim to:

  • work with vocational learners who have Level 3 qualifications within the network's subject focus
  • identify those who would benefit from additional support to achieve Level 4 qualifications
  • encourage or create the delivery and agreements needed to progress to Level 4 (and Level 7) where it does not currently exist
  • raise awareness of the options available for progression to Higher Education for those who have undertaken prior learning and training (such as APEL, APL and advanced standing)
  • ensure that those who wish to develop and refresh their skills through continuous professional development have opportunities to engage with Higher Education
  • create and deliver information, advice and guidance, which removes the complexity from the process of accessing and entering Higher Education

This will be delivered in a way that is mindful of:

  • the particular needs of vocational learners, learning providers and employers; and
  • the contribution being made to the prosperity of the region they work in.

How are they funded?

HEFCE, the LSC and DfES developed a Joint Progression Strategy to advance vocational and workplace progression into and through Higher Education. As part of this, HEFCE collaborated with national, regional and local partners to form Lifelong Learning Networks.

HEFCE-funded Lifelong Learning Networks have the specific remit to "generate innovative approaches, developing and supporting progression for vocational learners".
