Deputy Vice-Chancellor: Dr David Mackintosh

David Mackintosh was appointed Deputy Vice-Chancellor in November 2009. Previously he was Dean of the Faculty of Science here at Kingston University, and he first joined Kingston 21 years ago as a senior lecturer.

Dr Mackintosh was born and brought up in Elm Park, near Hornchurch in Essex. He wanted to be a scientist from the age of seven, inspired by his father, a welder with a passion for science. After a first degree in biochemistry at the University of Kent, he went on to do a doctorate in diabetic kidney disease and worked as a researcher at Guy’s Hospital Medical School, Charing Cross Medical School and West Middlesex Hospital before joining Kingston University.

Major responsibilities

The Deputy Vice-Chancellor is a member of the University’s Senior Management Group, Academic Directorate and the Executive Board. He is also an ex officio member of the Academic Board and attends meetings of the Governing Body.

The major responsibilities of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor are:

  • To deputise for the Vice-Chancellor across the whole range of activities both inside and outside the University.
  • To act as a leading member of the University’s senior management team and play a key role in developing and implementing its strategy.
  • To take lead responsibility for the academic affairs of the University.

The Deputy Vice-Chancellor is chair of the following committees:

  • Academic Directorate
  • Equality Committee
  • University Information Committee
  • Quality Enhancement Committee
  • Residential and Recreational Project Board
  • Reward Committee
  • South London Life Long Learning Network
  • Faculty Student Experience Group
  • Data Strategy Group

The Deputy Vice-Chancellor’s senior management team makes up the Academic Affairs Management Team and includes:
