Technology-enhanced learning

The Educational Technology Team focuses on the effective and appropriate use of educational technologies to enhance:

  • student learning; and
  • the student experience of learning and teaching.

This relates to both online and classroom-based learning, formal and informal, in the context of the University's Learning, Teaching and Assessment Strategy (PDF).

We are a central team of academics, developers, technical and administrative staff. Our work covers a number of strands:

  • e-learning strategy – focusing on policy, procedures and infrastructure for developing, promoting and embedding effective practice across the institution.
  • digital tools – the institutional StudySpace encompasses a core virtual learning environment (Blackboard) as well as a range of additional tools and environments, including social networking (One Community), online assessment, wikis, blogs and podcasts, desktop video and audio conferencing, and multi-user virtual reality worlds.
  • staff development – we provide advice on strategies, approaches and practices for enhancing learning, teaching and assessment through the appropriate use of technologies. Additionally, we provide staff development for:
    • all learning technologies supported centrally by the institution;
    • widely-used personal and mobile technologies;
    • classroom technologies; and
    • e-PDP.
  • Research and evaluation – evaluating emerging technologies and approaches, and their application to learning and teaching.
  • Resource development – the Academic E-developer Team supports staff across all faculties in the development of technology enhanced resources and activities. If you have an idea for a project, please contact Tony McNeill (ext 62769 or a.mcneill@kingston.ac.uk) to discuss how it might be taken further.
  • Classroom technologies – including electronic voting systems, tablet PCs, mobile podiums and text messaging. In addition to staff development, a number of technologies are available to staff for loan.
