Learning and teaching

We are committed to providing our students with a positive learning experience by:

  • striving to be student-centred and inclusive, drawing on the strengths of our diverse student population in respect of different needs, traditions and cultures;
  • developing ways to engage and support students in their studies and related activities;
  • taking account of the opinions of our students;
  • respecting the roles and contributions of all staff engaged in teaching and supporting learning; and
  • engaging in pedagogic and subject research and scholarship.

ADC Learning and Teaching Conference 2012

This year's conference held on 20 April was entitled 'Led by Learning: How the new strategic plan envisages approaches to learning, teaching and assessment and student engagement'.

The conference brought together course directors and Heads of Schools from across the University and provided them with information and advice on recommendations emanating from the Review of the Academic Framework and other work from across the University on improving the student academic experience.

The event focus was on the practicalities of motivating and supporting course teams in re-designing and re-validating programmes – achieved through the presentation of case studies from Kingston and other universities, and through providing opportunities to share ideas and approaches.

There were workshops on the following themes:

  • Curriculum development and assessment
  • Personal tutor systems
  • Embedding employability
  • Capstone projects
  • Technology-enhanced learning: effective practices

The keynote speakers were:

  • Professor Stuart Brand from Birmingham City University (BCU); and
  • Tansy Jessop from Winchester University.
