By train

Frequent trains run to Surbiton from London (every 12 minutes), leaving from Waterloo mainline station. You can find out more from National Rail Enquiries.

On leaving the station, turn right and walk up the hill (St Mark's Hill). Continue on past the traffic lights onto Lamberts Road, passing Hollyfield School on your left. Take the second road on your right, Burney Avenue. Clayhill is located at the bottom of this road. The total walk will take approximately 10 minutes.

Alternatively, you can take a black cab from the front of the station, which will take approximately five minutes.

By bus

The following buses run to Kingston from London:

  • 71 (from Chessington)
  • 85 (from Putney Bridge)
  • 111 (from Heathrow)
  • 131 (from Wimbledon)
  • 213 (from Sutton)
  • 281 (from Hounslow)
  • 285 (from Heathrow via Feltham)
  • 371 (from Richmond)

Surbiton is approximately 10 minutes from Kingston by one of the following local buses: 71, 281, K1, K2, K3, K4, 465, 418, 406. You can access a bus route map from Transport for London (PDF).

The University also has its own bus service, which runs during term time and is free to University students and staff.

If arriving at Surbiton by the 71, K1, K3 or K4 bus, alight at the stop opposite the Waitrose supermarket (Claremont Road). Walk to the roundabout and take the first exit on your left (St Mark's Hill). Continue straight on past the traffic lights onto Lamberts Road, passing Hollyfield School on your left. Take the second road on your right, Burney Avenue. Clayhill is located at the bottom of this road.

If arriving at Surbiton by the 281, K2, 465, 418 or 406 bus, alight at the stop at the top of St Mark's Hill in front of the church. Head towards and pass the traffic lights, continuing onto Lamberts Road. You will then pass Hollyfield School on your left. Take the second road on your right, Burney Avenue. Clayhill is located at the bottom of this road.

By car:

From the M25/A3

  • Leave the M25 motorway at junction 10 and join the A3 towards London. Continue on the A3 for approximately eight miles until you reach Tolworth Junction. Branch left here, then merge onto Hook Rise North.
  • At the next roundabout, take the first exit onto the A240 (signposted for Kingston) –Marks & Spencer will be on your right and Blockbuster Video on your left. Continue forward past the Iceland and Budgens supermarkets on your left and onto Ewell Road (the A240).
  • Entering Surbiton, you will go past the Royal Oak pub on your left. Continue past Surbiton Hospital on your left and look out for Surbiton Fire Station and Surbiton Library on your right. Then turn right onto Berrylands Road.
  • Continue along Berrylands Road until you reach a crossroads (which has a car dealership on the right-hand side). Turn left here onto King Charles Road and keep going over the iron bridge above the railway track.
  • Get into the right-hand lane and at the end of the road turn right onto Lamberts Road/Villiers Road. Then turn right again onto Burney Avenue. Clayhill is located at the bottom of this road.

From London (via the A3 and Wandsworth)

  • With Wandsworth shopping centre on your left, continue along the A3, passing Wandsworth Fire Station. Get into the left-hand lane and branch left at the traffic lights onto West Hill (the A3), following the signs for Guildford/Portsmouth. You will pass ADT College on your left-hand side.
  • Continue into Putney (the road eventually turns into two lanes) and past the underpass (the road now turns into three lanes). Continue straight ahead, passing the signs to Roehampton, a set of traffic lights and an ASDA store on your left-hand side.
  • At the Robin Hood junction roundabout, continue straight ahead onto Robin Hood Way (the A3) which is signposted Guildford/Portsmouth. Continue onto Beverley Way (still the A3) and past the New Malden junction.
  • At Tolworth junction, branch left and then merge onto Tolworth Rise South, which is signposted Kingston/Reigate/Sutton (you will see a big tower – Tolworth Tower – on your left)
  • At the roundabout, take the third exit onto the A240, which is signposted for Kingston – Marks & Spencer will be on your right and Blockbuster Video on your left. Continue forward past the Iceland and Budgens supermarkets on your left and onto Ewell Road (the A240).

From Kingston University (Penryhn Road campus)

  • With Kingston University on your left, continue straight ahead. At the major traffic lights, continue straight on up Surbiton Hill Road.
  • At the next set of traffic lights (with Hollyfield School on your left), turn left onto Lamberts Road. Continue straight on over the zebra crossing and turn left onto Burney Avenue. Clayhill is located at the bottom of this road.

From Kingston University (Kingston Hill campus)

  • With Kingston University on your left, continue straight ahead up Kingston Hill, passing Kingston Hospital on your left-hand side. At the roundabout, take the second exit onto London Road (the A308) under a bridge (there will be a petrol station on your right-hand side).
  • Continue forward through the traffic lights, passing the ASDA and Boots stores. Get into left-hand lane ready to turn left at the traffic lights onto Cambridge Road.
  • Continue forward until you reach another set of traffic lights, where you need to get into right-hand lane and turn right at into Hawkes Road.
  • Continue up Hawkes Road until you reach some traffic lights, where you need to turn left onto Villiers Road.
  • Continue along Villiers Road until you reach a mini-roundabout. Here you go straight ahead onto Villiers Avenue (past a small parade of shops on your left-hand side). Take the third road on your left (Burney Avenue). Clayhill is located at the bottom of this road.


From the airports

From Heathrow

  • Catch the 111 or 285 bus straight to Kingston upon Thames; or
  • Take the Piccadilly line Underground service to Earls Court, where you need to change to the District Line. Alight at Wimbledon and catch a Surbiton-bound mainline train.

From Gatwick

  • Take a train to Clapham Junction and then catch a Surbiton-bound train from there.
