TextHELP Read and Write

Read and Write is a program that helps with reading and writing through several features. It can be used with any Windows program, for example, Microsoft Word, Excel, Email or the Internet. It is suitable for students with dyslexia and/or visual impairment, and is available on all ICT Services workstations.

A Toolbar allows you to access all the facilities that are available:

  • text reading
  • spell checking and dictionary
  • word prediction
  • homophones editor
  • calculator
  • scanning
  • fact folder and fact finder

Reading Text

Read and Write can:

  • read text aloud using the Toolbar
  • read text as you type
  • read text on web pages
  • read text from text files and the clipboard

Using Word Prediction

Word Prediction is a list of words that can be used:

  • To complete the word that you are typing
  • To select the next word from the list of words it tries to predict

The Dictionary

You use the Dictionary to look up different meanings for selected words.
You can configure the dictionary to display:

  • basic definitions – lists meanings and word inflections
  • advanced definitions – can use advanced dictionary functions and display synonyms
  • web definitions – list meanings in the Dictionary.com website

Word Wizard

You can use the Word Wizard to:

  • help you find words or phrases that you cannot remember
  • search for words using opposites or other relationships. For example, if you are searching using the phrase “parts of a car”, the Word Wizard will list words like throttle, tailpipe and fender.

The Homophone Facility

You can use the Homophone facility to view descriptions of like sounding words to help you ensure you have typed the correct word.
For example, the word Sea will list the following words in the Homophone list box:

C – the alphabetical letter “C”
Sea – the ocean
See – perceive by sight

The Calculator

Two kinds of calculators are available for use, the Standard Calculator and the Gold calculator.

You can:

  • change the appearance of the calculator by selecting different background and foreground colours, and different font.
  • chose the way the calculations are read aloud. For example, it can speak the name of the button when you hover your mouse over it or speak the name of the button when you click on it.
  • view the history of any calculation you have made.
  • convert values in a document in almost any application. For example, you could convert a value 250cm to metres in a Word document by highlighting it and clicking on the Convert option of the Calculator
  • obtain a quick answer to a calculation in a document without launching the Calculator. Just highlight the calculation and select the Evaluate option of the Calculator

Scanning Facility

The scanning facility allows you to manage your scanning project. It allows you to save files as MS Word documents and have them read back to you.
It automatically designates each part of the scan as a block of text, graphic or table. This is to ensure that when you save it as a document, each part of it will behave as required.

For example, a block of text must be designated as a text zone so that you can edit it in MS Word.
You can change the type of zone if it has not been allocated correctly.

The Fact Folder

The Fact Folder is a desk research tool. It allows you to capture text and graphics from any application and organize them into a research report that can aid you with your study.

You use the Fact Folder to:

  • create and organize study categories
  • capture and save text and graphics from any application
  • create an MS Word, HTML, or Palm PDA report using the study categories
  • view and update text and graphics using the application in which they were created.

The Fact Finder

Fact Finder is used to search for information on the Internet using specific search engines.

You can:

  • add new search engines
  • set one search engine as the default search engine
  • search for facts by selecting the search engine from the ones that you have added
