Kingston Academic Practice Standards framework

The Centre for Higher Education Research and Practice (CHERP) provides guidance and support for all members of staff involved in teaching and supporting learning, to enable them to engage with a range of continuing professional development (CPD) opportunities.

It is leading the development and implementation of a Kingston University HEA-accredited CPD framework which reflects the requirements of the UK Professional Standards Framework (UKPSF).

The Kingston Academic Practice Standards (KAPS) framework includes provision for those new to teaching in higher education, as well as opportunities for more experienced staff. The framework will include accredited courses which are being developed by CHERP and will enable colleagues to gain recognition through the KAPS framework mapped to an appropriate descriptor within the UKPSF.

The University's corporate strategy, Led by Learning, advocates being led by learning in all that we do: enabling others to learn, continually learning ourselves and pushing the boundaries of learning through scholarship, teaching, research, enterprise and professional practice. The KAPS framework is located within this strategy and is intended for academics and other professional staff involved in teaching and supporting learning to encourage professional development and career progression. This includes all academic staff, those in academic management and leadership roles, graduate teaching assistants, researchers who teach or supervise research students, PhD students and professional services staff who support student learning.

KAPS has been designed as part of a CPD programme for those who have not already gained an appropriate qualification or professional recognition as a teacher in higher education. It offers the opportunity to gain professional recognition mapped to the UKPSF at the appropriate category of HEA fellowship:

  • Associate fellow (AFHEA)
  • Fellow (FHEA)
  • Senior fellow (SFHEA)
  • Principal fellow (PFHEA)
