Hardware

The Centre for GIS has a dedicated computer laboratory exclusively used for teaching, research and coursework by our students. Totalling 18 PCs, they are all loaded with the latest GIS software.

Software

The Centre for GIS is not restricted in the teaching of individual, bespoke, software packages. It takes an holistic view to software and believes that students should understand the principles in their operation and then gain understanding in using a broad range of packages to this end we are fully licensed and teach the following packages:

ESRI are suppliers of one of the leading GIS sofware packages currently in use. As well as core desktop GIS processing (ArcMap), additional facilities include techical workstation processing (ARC/INFO), 3D visualisation (ArcScene), internet map server (ArcIMS) and mobile mapping (ArcPad).

ERDAS Imagine is the leading remote sensing software vendor. Facilities include standard image processing techiques, as well as 3D visualisation, photogrammetry, topographic analysis and radar.

MapInfo is one of the leading GIS vendors in commercial applications. Using an intuitive interface, data processing and mapping can be performed easily.

Idrisi is extensively used for the teaching and research of remote sensing within Universities.

Data

We have access to a large archive of on-site and internet based subscription data that is available to all our students for use in their studies. This includes a large selection of high quality Ordnance Survey data, as well as materials available as a result of our close relationship with other data provision companies.

Suppliers of high resolution digital aerial photography of the UK (Millenium Map) and distributors of NextMap's InSAR DEM.

The Ordnance Survey are the UK's primary spatial data supplier, incorpating detailed vector maps and high resolution aerial photography. An extensive collection of OS products are available to students through the Digimap service.

The Shuttle Radar Topography Mission (SRTM) forms the largest and most detailed DEM of the Earth. Freely available to download it is a valuable resource for landscape modelling and visualisation.

Cities Revealed offers the highest resolution aerial photography of urban areas in the UK.

Infoterra is one of the UK's leading remote sensing data and service providers.

Landmap is an academic project that has created a DEM of the UK and Ireland using InSAR techniques.

Journals

The Kingston Centre for GIS currently subscribes to the journals listed below. Current students that are Athens registered can click on the links to go to the electronic, on-line, versions of these journals.

Those that are Athens registered, and want to keep up-to-date with the latest journals, are strongly recommended to use the Zetoc Table of Contents service. Once logged in, simply select the journals you are interested in and, when a new issue is published, the latest table of contents are emailed to you.
