Rastafarianism

Rastafarianism originated in Jamaica in the 1920s as an expression of faith and cultural pride.

Beliefs

Both Jewish and Christian principles are foundational in Rastafarian thought, though Ethiopia rather than Israel is seen as the Promised Land. They follow the Nazarite vow of separation, which in practice means that:

  • hair is left uncut and unbrushed
    (worn in dreadlocks)
  • dietary regulations are observed
(pork and sometimes other meats being forbidden)
  • contact with death is avoided
    (funeral attendance is uncommon)

Often a crown or a tam (ie a woolen hat) in the red, green and gold of the Ethiopian flag is worn.

Rastafarian worship is in the form of Nyabinghi, whose style has given rise to Reggae music.
