Chaplaincy FAQ’s
Is the Chaplaincy Christian or Multi-Faith?
The chaplaincy is a service for everyone in the University whatever their belief or faith. There is one full time chaplain working in the University who is an ordained Christian minister, and some chaplaincy events are specifically Christian in character. Others activities are intended to build relationships and understanding between people of different faiths and belief in the University, and local faith leaders are often invited into the University for chaplaincy events. The chaplaincy has strong links with all the local faith groups and can put you in touch with a leader of your own faith. We assume that faiths are different, and that we must treat that difference with understanding and respect.
I’ve heard Kingston described as a “Secular University” – what does that mean?
Amongst our students and staff you will find a huge variety of belief and faith, but the University is officially neutral in matters of faith and religion.
Are there places where I can go to pray in the University?
The University has room for quiet and prayer at the Penrhyn Road campus. Known as the “Quiet Place”, these two rooms are open during the day time. There is also a small room available at Kingston Hill, and both of these places are heavily used, especially by Muslim students and staff who meet for both daily and Friday prayers. All the student faith societies regularly book rooms for their own meetings and worship – check with the societies for up to date times and places.

What Student Faith Groups are there?
Within the Student Union there are societies for Ahmadiyya Muslim, Christian, Hindu, Muslim, and Sikh students. All the student faith societies are popular and active. If a group of students want to start another faith society they can contact the Kingston University Students’ Union and who will be able to give advice.

Are Chaplaincy Events Open to the General Public?
Not all chaplaincy are advertised on this site as some (eg. Drop Ins) are intended for members of the University only. We also run events (eg. lectures, concerts) which are advertised widely in the local community. Part of our role is to build links between the University and the local faith communities. Events advertised at 'What's On' are normally open to the public.
How do I cater for a multi-faith event?
