BBC Home Planet

Ros Taylor has become an established regular for the BBC Radio 4 Environmental Discussion Programme, Home Planet. Alongside Richard Daniels (presenter) and Philip Stott (Emeritus Professor in Biogeography at SOAS), the ever-present panel member, Ros has debated diverse environmental and sustainability topics such as; 'should kangaroos be culled?, the impacts of large scale dams, 'plastic' agriculture in Spain, disposal of fridges, the WEEE (Waste Electronic and Electrical Equipment) directive, disposable versus re-usable nappies, energy security, and much more besides. In the current series she has discussed drought in the horn of Africa, phthalates in water, carbon rationing, development issues linked with arsenic poisoning associated with pipe wells in Bangladesh, and the viability, environmental impact and likely sustainability of LNG (Liquified Natural Gas) as a replacement energy source replacing dwindling North Sea gas supplies.

Home Planet is produced by Nick Patrick for Pier Productions.

Working on the programme has also put Ros, and thereby the School, in touch with many Kingston Alumni. The most recent contact was from Steve Charles, a Geography graduate now working in Abu Dhabi as a pilot for a company working in oil field support. Along with a news update, Steve sent a photo from a long ago (1975) Kingston field trip to East Africa. We are always interested in news of our alumni - and the photos - contact Claire Ivison for addition to the KU Alumni database and newsletter.
