Who defines the forefront? Advertising or research?

A team of young researchers has been gathered to share their experiences of what it's like to work in market research. They want to tell you how research isn't just at the forefront; it defines it! They'll explain how they interpret and deliver their findings to senior decision makers of some of the biggest companies and brands around. So, if you ever wondered how the brand values of the Olympic Games were developed or how Radio 1xtra was re-styled to meet the needs of its target market, for example, come along and listen. Who knows, you might want to define the forefront, too.

This session is designed to show you what researchers actually do, the type of projects they get involved with and how they help influence and shape marketing and advertising strategies, and ultimately the bottom line! It's a demonstration of how psychology, sociology and economics are used and applied in the commercial world!

This is a very practical session, which gives students a flavour of the market research industry. It includes three speakers, two recent entrants to the industry, with 3 or 4 years' experience who talk about what it's like working for an agency and they provide a couple of case studies to illustrate what they've been doing. There is a short session on post graduate qualifications and the Market Research Society which is a Chartered Institute, and an Ambassador of the Association of Qualitative Researchers provides some amazing examples of work undertaken during his career.

This session is being run on behalf of two worldwide research organisations, the MRS (Market Research Society) and the AQR (Association of Qualitative Researchers).

These organisations provide the ethical framework for research, a training and examination structure for the research industry, and a knowledge sharing and communications platform within the industry.
