The Inaugural Lecture of Professor Will Brooker: The Death and Resurrection of David Bowie

Following his immersive yearlong research, which attracted international media attention, Professor Will Brooker introduces three events to mark the publication of his book Forever Stardust: David Bowie Across the Universe, and David Bowie's 70th birthday: a live music event, Prof Brooker's inaugural lecture and a screening of his documentary.

Following the death of David Bowie, his last two videos, 'Blackstar' and 'Lazarus', were widely interpreted as containing clues to his illness. This lecture, based on Will Brooker's unique, year-long research project on Bowie and his monograph Forever Stardust, demonstrates that death has been a running theme throughout Bowie's work since the 1960s. It reexamines 'Blackstar' and 'Lazarus' as complex explorations of 'passing on' -- not just of mortality but of continued life and legacy. David Jones is gone, Brooker argues, but 'Bowie' is still alive.
