Lunchtime Research Seminar: Everything you ever wanted to know about the GDPR and medical research (but were afraid to ask)

The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) will become European Union law shortly. It has implications for data science, particularly where sensitive data (which includes healthcare data) is involved.

This presentation examines the regulatory environment that will exist once the GDPR comes fully into force, and how the medical researcher can avoid breaking the law. The derogations for research and their likely interpretations will be discussed, and the changes from previous data protection legislation highlighted.

More about the speaker:

John Rumbold is a senior research fellow at Nottingham Trent University, currently working on an ethico-legal framework for the use of Big Data in healthcare research. He has legal and medical qualifications.

His thesis was on the provision of expert evidence to refute or support the sleepwalking defence. He has published on medico-legal issues relating to sleep disorders and other medical conditions, the interpretation of hospital-level mortality statistics, and health informatics.

His research interests include mental condition defences, medical ethics and law, legal issues of information technology and robotics, and the intersection of law, ethics and science.
