Looking at examples from British novelists including Andrea Levy, Zadie Smith, Julian Barnes, Neil Gaiman and Kazuo Ishiguro, this talk argues that British novelists are engaged in a dynamic creative exercise encouraging readers to think about Britishness 'beyond race'.
