Centre for Public Engagement seminar: Loving Christian – a journey of discovery

Georgina and Paul Wakefield will speak about the highs and lows of caring and supporting their son Christian as he travels with a mental illness towards recovery. They will discuss the emotional impact on the family, stigma, crisis situations, issues of clinical practice, five years in care, recovery and discovery, back in the community and acceptance at last.

The couple have cared for their son Christian for 25 years; Christian developed Schizophrenia at the age of 16. Today he has managed to live independently for ten years, worked part time for eight years and employs a Personal Assistant through the government direct payment scheme. Paul has also cared for Georgina who has suffered from severe anxiety and depression for the best part of her adult life.

They are passionate about raising the profile of mental illness and two words sum up their determination to change things; injustice and respect.
