HEA seminar on art and design

Much recent focus has been placed on developing digital literacies in the curriculum, and the internet has become a first port of call for many students. In contrast, this seminar will remind us of the value of material culture as a creative resource, both in personal collections developed by the individual and for formal collections or archives. The methods showcased may provide ways of approaching future interdisciplinary collaborations.

There are two main strands to the presentations and activities of this one day event.

  • Collecting and personal collections as primary research for design, and taxonomy as an analytical tool helping establish knowledge from the mass object.
  • Focus on established collections in the curriculum, and students as research partners.

Speakers include Cathy Gale (Kingston University) on taxonomy, Chris Draper (Anglia Ruskin) on collecting, Leanne Manfredi on museum collections (V&A) and Kingston students involved in recent projects using collecting (graphic design) and reinterpreting historic collections (fashion).

There will be opportunities to network, discuss, and share details of your personal collecting, develop ways of working with collecting and collections in the curriculum and become the first members of the new Museum of X when it is launched at this event. Please do join us for this day which promises to be both stimulating and fun.

Booking is essential to attend this event.
