About this course

Why choose this course?

This course enables you to explore and develop informed approaches to filmmaking and moving image work, whilst acquiring a range of techniques and professional skills. It is designed to help you to conceive and develop innovative and imaginative ideas, resolving them into completed works with both high production values and contextual awareness.

What will you study?

Filmmaking at Kingston is broad-based with an exploratory approach. You will learn about a range of possibilities for the planning, production, post-production and presentation of ambitious ideas, gaining an insight into the increasingly diverse platforms for moving image production and dissemination. Teaching will include approaches to documentary, fiction, artists’ film, experimental work, production design, studio and location work, along with specialised camera, lighting, sound and editing tuition. Excellent resources and cutting-edge software enable you to realise both personal and group projects.

Professional development will also be a key factor in your studies, taught by staff and visitors with a range of experiences in the expanded field of filmmaking. The course makes full use of the resources offered by London’s cultural sector, offering field trips, placements and visiting lectures by practitioners and industry professionals, and covering a range of techniques and practices.

We encourage the development of an individual practice and role-specific group work in the first two years, giving you a range of experiences, methods and approaches to content development. The final year study is self-initiated, emphasising the opportunity to focus on and examine a particular area of interest.
