Kingston School of Art welcome information

The Student Support Office will post information about our academic skills support around the Faculty and on StudySpace (our student intranet) at the start of term - so keep an eye out for news on seminars and more information once you arrive.

Buying equipment

Computers and software

Most students starting a course at Kingston will either already have a computer or be planning to buy one.
You may already have a good idea of your requirements - a graphic design student will probably opt for a Macintosh running Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator; an architecture student will probably prefer a PC and CAD software.

If you are unsure about your requirements, please wait until you can talk to academic and technical staff when you arrive as they are experts in this area.

If you feel you can't wait, the best advice would be to go for the most powerful machine you can afford with a large screen and as much RAM as possible - a PC for 3D design, architecture or surveying students; a Mac for graphics or video production students. It is now possible to buy an Apple machine running both Windows and Mac OS, the best of both worlds.

Many students will opt for a laptop for the obvious convenience. However, they are generally not as powerful for the kind of demanding applications that we run. You may also want to invest in a good external hard drive (essential for video).
