Opportunities Fund – fuelling the Formula Student team

With the help of alumni donations to the Opportunities Fund, Kingston's engineering students have built an electric racing car from scratch, and then taken it to Silverstone to race in the world's largest student motorsport event. Competing against 141 other universities from more than 34 countries, Kingston University proved to be the only UK team with a viable electric vehicle.

The Opportunities Fund is all about enhancing the student experience, giving them the chance to tackle elements of their chosen subjects in practical, dynamic and challenging ways. The Formula Student project certainly achieves this. Sourcing the materials to build the car, working around the clock in order to meet looming deadlines, and finally, the euphoria of seeing their car compete on a world stage, have all made this such a memorable and life-changing project.

Mechanical engineering student Hugo Valencia, summed up what the opportunity meant to him and his team-mates. "The pressure to get the car to Silverstone was immense, but the feeling of pride and achievement once we managed it was incredible. It's been the highlight of my time at Kingston, and has enhanced my knowledge in a way that just isn't possible through reading text books. That the University's alumni helped to make this possible through their donations means the world to us… I hope we did them proud!"

With two more events planned for the summer, the team are looking to build on this experience, improving and innovating and pushing the boundaries of what is possible with an electric car.
