Your safety
If you have registered for an LRC Access card via the University Disability and Dyslexia Support Service, you may have been advised of the need for a Personal Evacuation Plan. If you have one of these you should follow those guidelines. If you do not have a Personal Evacuation Plan and feel that you need one (for example if you have a mobility difficulty or a hearing impairment) you should contact the Disability & Dyslexia Support Service who will be able to advise you.
The general guidelines are that you are advised to inform the Library staff on arrival if you have mobility difficulties or impaired hearing so in case of an emergency evacuation, we are aware that you are in the building. If you are hearing impaired, you are advised not to work alone on remote floors (at Penrhyn Road and Kingston Hill), as the emergency alarm system works only on an audible principle at the present time.
Lifts must not be used during an emergency or fire drill. People unable to negotiate the stairs should make their way to designated refuge areas, typically located in stairwells. You should use a mobile phone to make contact with security staff on number 07831 136 082, giving details of your position.
- Kingston Hill
The Fire Assembly Point for all students at Kingston Hill LRC is the green area in front of Business School. In an emergency you should make your way to the fire exit on the main stairwell and await help. There is an EVAC chair on the second floor by the exit barrier.
There are also emergency intercoms (but not at wheelchair height) by the lifts on each floor.
There is a phone on the second floor (Teaching Resources Collection) which links directly to the Enquiry Desk. - Knights Park
If you are a Knights Park student, special arrangements will have been made for you so that you can leave the building safely in case of emergency. If you are a visiting student, you should report your presence to a member of the library staff who will call for assistance should the emergency alarm sound. The Fire Assembly point at KP is beyond the main gate area in front of the building nearby Blue Bridge and Tower Block. There is one EVAC chair available in the Tower Building on the ground floor. - Penrhyn Road
If there is an emergency and the LRC has to be evacuated, any students not able to use the stairs should make their way to the fire exit doors onto the main Tower block staircase (not the LRC's internal staircase). The fire exit door is specially fire proofed and is extra wide to enable easy wheelchair exit. The area immediately beyond fire exit door is a Fire Refuge. The emergency Intercom is available on the ground floor. In the ATRC the phone links directly to the Enquiry Desk. - Roehampton Vale
If there is an emergency and the Library has to be evacuated, students should make their way to the Fire Exit through the main entrance. There are also fire exits from the Silent Study Room and the Computing and Reprographics Room.
