Background
Kingston University Archives hold the Collection of Vane Ivanovic (1913-1999). Ivanovic was many things- shipping merchant, political campaigner, and in his youth an athlete, representing Yugoslavia in the hurdles- including at the 1936 Berlin and 1948 London Olympic Games.
The Collection contains Olympic memorabilia collected by Ivanovic, with one particularly fascinating piece. At first glance it is a photograph of a German castle, however on the mount there are 123 signatures. During the 1936 games Ivanovic had the mount signed by some of the athletes and other well known figures who he met.
Here you can examine this picture in more depth, and explore the stories of some of those behind the signatures including Jesse Owens, the British gold medal winning relay team, and Harold Abrahams and Evelyn Aubrey Montague of Chariots of Fire fame.
