What happens if you have lost an item

If you misplace an item of library stock that is on loan to you, please notify a member of staff as soon as possible.

We will renew the item to avoid fines accruing and will ask you to check at home again for the item. You can get the item details from a member of staff or from the My Account section of the catalogue. The barcode inside the item must match the one listed on your Library account.

Library staff will also check the shelves for the missing item (this can take a day or two) and, if found, will remove it from your library account.

What happens if the item cannot be found

If the item is still on your account after a week, please speak to a member of staff again. We will register the item as a ‘Query’ so that you can continue to borrow from the Library. We allow a 4 week period to locate the item. During this period the item will not count towards the total number of items on loan to you.

After 4 weeks

If the lost item has not been returned or found in the LRC after 4 weeks, you will receive a letter informing you of the replacement costs. You should pay this amount in the LRC as soon as possible. If a fine has accrued on the item this must also be paid.

You may alternatively buy a new copy of the item yourself (via Amazon, for example). There are more details about this in Replacing items.

Paying replacement costs

If you do not pay replacement costs within a month, we will raise a university invoice. This will cover replacement costs, any fine due on the item and a £5 administration charge.

Once an invoice has been raised, you must pay it at Credit Control in Cooper House.

See the section Fines and Charges for more information.

If you find the item after paying for it

If you find the item within 3 months from the date you paid for it, you may bring it back to the LRC, together with the receipt, and receive a refund for the replacement costs only. Fines and the administration charge are not refundable.
