Zones
Why we have zones in the LRCs
We have created zones within the LRCs to help you choose the best place to work. Different people have different preferences for their study environment; some like to have a little background noise, others require complete silence in order to concentrate on their work.
Please choose your study area carefully so that you do not disturb others.
All zones are clearly marked with signs. It is possible that you may be asked to move to a more appropriate area.
Silent study zones

Location of Silent study areas:
- Knights Park - Silent study in the Special Collections room
- Nightingale Centre - First floor
- Penrhyn Road - Silent study areas on the second and third floors
- Roehampton Vale - Silent study room
These areas need to be kept completely silent. We have tried to locate the Silent zones in areas where we can ensure silence by regular monitoring. We ask that you respect others by observing the Silent rule in these areas.
Quiet study zones

Location of Quiet study areas:
- Knights Park - Study tables located next to the windows alongside the book and journal collections
- Nightingale Centre - Teaching Resources Collection on 2nd floor
- Penrhyn Road - First floor
Sometimes it is useful to be able to help a friend or a colleague, advising them on their work. You may need to talk quietly to discuss your work with one other person. We have created Quiet areas where you may talk quietly as long as you are not disturbing others.
Group study zones

Location of Group study areas:
- Each LRC has designated group work areas.
- Café areas at Penrhyn Road and the Nightingale Centre. You can eat and drink in these areas. These areas are also Phone zones.
In these areas you can work in a group. Current students can also use seminar rooms and graduate centres.
Phone zones

Location of areas where you can make or take calls in:
- Knights Park - Outside PC area.
- Nightingale Centre - Café area on the ground floor.
- Penrhyn Road - Café area on the ground floor.
- Roehampton Vale - OPAC area.
You can receive and make phone calls in these areas. Otherwise you must switch your phone to silent or vibrate in order not to disturb other people. You cannot make calls unless in a phone zone. The stairs are not a phone zone.
Food and drink zones

Location of areas where you can eat and drink:
- Nightingale Centre - Café area on the ground floor.
- Penrhyn Road - Café area and reading garden on the ground floor.
Although you can drink bottled water throughout the LRCs, you can eat light snacks and consume other drinks only in the areas listed above.
