Social events

  • IMPORTANT: Tickets are non-refundable and do not include transportation.
  • We don't sell tickets on the day of the event, so don't delay; we have limited tickets and they do sell out!
  • Always check your timetable before you book, as some of our social events may clash with other important activities at the University.

Here are details of the social events that are available for the September 2016 intake. These were designed to help you explore your new environment  as well as make new friends and have fun.

Welcome reception - free

Join us at one of Kingston's most popular pubs for an enjoyable evening, meeting your fellow international students who have also just arrived. Everyone will receive one free drink, and snacks will be provided.

  • When: Thursday 15 September, 18:00-21:00
  • Where: Kingston town centre, the Kings Tun pub (check the map in the International Arrivals and Orientation Guide that you'll receive when you arrive, to find out how to get here)
  • What should I wear: casual clothes
  • What should I bring: your KU ID, your passport if you wish to buy or consume alcohol, and some spending money
  • How can I book: no need to book, just turn up!

Day Trip to Brighton- free

Please note: this trip is only open to visiting students.

This day trip is part of the visiting student programme, and all visiting students are invited to attend

  • When: Saturday 17 September, 09:30-19:00 (approximately)
  • Where: meet at Penrhyn Road campus, main reception
  • What should I wear: casual clothes and comfortable shoes for walking
  • What should I bring: spending money, an umbrella (in case of bad weather) and a camera
  • How can I book: spaces are allocated on a first come, first served basis and you will be emailed in August by the Study Abroad and International Learning (SAIL) Office about how to sign up for this event.

Afternoon tea

Sign up for a very traditional British event, and enjoy tea with scones, cakes and sandwiches!

  • When: Saturday 17 September, 14:45-16:00
  • Where: Kingston town centre

  • What should I bring: spending money if you would like additional drinks
  • How much does it cost: £10

Halls welcome event – free

There will be a compulsory Halls Induction on Sunday 18 September at your hall of residence. This will give you a chance to meet your Halls Connectors and everyone in your halls that will become your home for the year, and will give you important information regarding living in halls. Don't forget there is a free BBQ after to help celebrate your arrival at your new home for the year.

  • Where: all 5 university owned halls (Seething Wells, Clayhill, Kingston Hill, Middle Mill and Kingston Bridge House)

    Please note: this is a compulsory event for everyone living in a University-owned hall of residence.

Bowling social

A great way to get to know some of your fellow students whilst having a bit of fun. Join us for an evening of classic, ten-pin bowling.

Postgraduate networking sessions - free

Let us help you find your feet! These sessions will enable you to meet other postgraduate students, ask questions to recent graduates and alumni, and get introduced to the KU Talent (careers) team.

Freshers' Fayre - free

The Union of Kingston Students' legendary Freshers' Fayre will run over two days, and will involve hundreds of stalls giving out free gifts, as well as the chance to speak to representatives of societies and to sign up to our volunteering programmes. Make sure you don't miss the FREE PIZZA from our sponsor, Dominos!

Freshers' Ball

The Union of Kingston Students will also be hosting the Freshers' Ball; the biggest student party of the year. It will be held in Pryzm nightclub in Kingston town centre, and will boast an awesome circus theme! Expect live music performances, DJ's, circus-themed entertainment, a photo booth, magicians and much more! Tickets are available now , alongside our Freshers' Access All Areas Wristband which gives you entry to multiple events throughout this week. Grab yours now as they sell out quickly!

Walking tour of central London

This event is now sold out.

If you can't wait to go into central London, but don't know where to start, why not sign up for our guided walking tour. We'll take you to some of London's most famous sights, and you'll get to know the city and meet other students.

Hampton Court Palace trip

This event is now sold out.

This magnificent palace set in delightful gardens was famously one of Henry VIII's favourite palaces. Explore his State Apartments and those of King William III where history is brought to life with costumed guides. After an hour's guided tour, you will be free to explore what is really a palace of two stories: a Tudor palace, magnificently developed by Cardinal Wolsey and later Henry VIII, alongside a baroque palace built by William III and Mary II.

  • When: Sunday 25 September. Tours will be running at 10:45, 12:45 and 14:45
  • Where: Hampton Court Palace (a short bus ride from Kingston town centre)

International Cafe – free

Every month we organise our famous International Cafe, where you can get together with other international students and enjoy a free hot or cold drink. At the Cafe, we'll introduce you to the amazing things the UK has to offer, with quizzes, games and lots more to entertain you.

Sunday lunch

Join us for a traditional roast at a local pub. This delicious meal consists of roast meat with gravy, roast potatoes and vegetables (vegetarian option available).
