Kingston's Faculty of Science, Engineering and Computing showcases expertise at Food Matters Live event

Food Matters Live is a new annual event based at London's ExCel arena. The three day exhibition brought together the food and drink industry, retailers, food service providers, academia, government and those working in nutrition and health to tackle one of the today's important challenges: the relationship between food, health and nutrition.

Highlights from the exhibition floor included innovation in healthy ingredients from companies such as Coca-Cola and Kellogg's. New start-ups demonstrated diverse new products including revolutionary vegetarian sausages and the appeal of edible insects. Leading food research organisations were also represented including several national bodies and other universities.

The Faculty of Science, Engineering and Computing hosted a stand to demonstrate KU's expertise in the food related life sciences field. Visitors were asked to ‘chuck the junk' at our BAD food sty, underwent health tests and were subjected to pictures of grub in the name of research! 
 
Our experts were on hand to talk about their work, for example Dr Liz Opara who last year, published a report on the metals content of infant milk for First Steps Nutrition Trust, and Professor Andrea Petroczi who has recently led a study for the World Anti-Doping Agency into athletes who have taken banned drugs, but denied doing so.

A number of students accompanied the experts and gained valuable insight into the workings of the worldwide food industry and benefitted from speaking to other exhibitors about opportunities for placements and recruitment.

The event was an excellent showcase for our courses, research capabilities and consultancy services and the faculty are planning for this year's event at the end of 2015.
