Overview

Professor Pierscionek is the Associate Dean for Research and Enterprise at the University's Faculty of Science, Engineering and Computing. After completing her first two degrees and gaining a PhD in biochemistry and optics, she continued her studies on the eye looking in particular at changes that can develop in the lens over time and with natural ageing. She continues to research into optics, protein chemistry, biophysics, biomechanics and biochemistry of the eye, studying areas such as cataracts, ocular implants and glaucoma as well as age related changes in visual function using psychophysical techniques.  

Professor Pierscionek has taught healthcare ethics and law and lectured in emerging ethical and legal issues in medicine and healthcare. Her work at Kingston sees her manage a diverse research and enterprise portfolio whilst conducting a program of research in vision science with colleagues from across the faculty.  Legal and ethical issues continue to be active interests; she has an MBA and legal qualifications to LLM level and is a scientific advisor for the Safer Medicines Trust and a member of the Employment Tribunals (South London).

The author of more than 100 peer-review journal papers and a book, she has obtained external funding from a range of sources including  the EU and charities since arriving at Kingston. She sits on a number of editorial boards and international committees, including the editorial boards of The Journal of Biomedical Optics and the Open Optics Journal.
