Overview

Prof Jarvis's research aims to develop a better understanding of how Earth's oceans and atmosphere operated in the distant past, particularly during periods of extreme climate warmth - so-called "greenhouse" conditions. 

We are, today, experiencing the highest level of atmospheric CO2 in the last 500,000 years, and likely higher than at any time since at least 20 million years ago.  Our current climate is entering a state previously known only from before the pre-Quaternary (>2.6 million years ago), so-called 'Deep Time'.  Using the example of CO2 alone, it is evident, therefore, that it is critical to study 'Deep Time' if we are to accurately predict future climate change, because we have already returned back to the future!

Specifically, Prof Jarvis studies how the physical and chemical compositions and fossil contents of ancient marine sediments deposited in deep-water environments, faithfully record global climate change and past environmental conditions over periods of thousands to millions of years, and how and why rapid, sudden catastrophic events may sometimes occur. 

For example, variations in the ratios of the stable isotopes of oxygen and carbon preserved in ancient limestones are being used to quantify changes in past ocean-surface temperatures, and to identify changes in the amount of organic matter being deposited on land and under the sea.  Such variation has been shown to be associated with rises and falls in global sea-level and to occur synchronously on different continents. 

Associated fossils enable us to precisely date such events and to better understand changes in ocean circulation, oxygenation and fertility.  Trace metals preserved in the sediments offer further insights on global environmental change, including episodes of increased volcanic activity.

Prof Jarvis focuses particularly on the Cretaceous Period, 66-146 million years ago, a time of extreme climate warmth and very high sea-levels, typified in Britain by the deposition of the Chalk.   His research includes work in Europe (England, France, Germany), North Africa (Tunisia) and South America (Venezuela).  It is only by integrating studies of geological sections from multiple localities world-wide that we will be able to understand earth-ocean-biosphere linkages in Deep Time and, therefore, likely climate-feedback processes in Earth's future climate system.

Commercial applications of this work include the dating and high-resolution correlation of strata in oil and gas basins, and the better prediction of the geological and geographical distribution of organic-rich sediments that are potential petroleum source rocks.
