Professor of environmental geoscience, Head of School of Geography, Geology & the Environment, Kingston University.
Professor Gillmore is Professor of Environmental Geoscience and Head of Kingston University's School of Geography, Geology and the Environment. One of his chief research and teaching interests is in the study of Radon - a naturally occurring radioactive gas - which comes from the decay of uranium in rocks and soils. When radon comes out into the open air it quickly dilutes to harmless concentrations, but when it builds up in an enclosed space, such as a cave or a house, it can become a real health hazard.
One of the areas Prof Gillmore is currently looking at involves health risk assessments for archaeologists and earth scientists working in confined spaces such as caves and abandoned mines. This work also includes geohazards - for example the role that radon can play in assessing earthquake activity (and hence the risk of an earthquake happening).
