Hilary has been a lecturer at Kingston University since 1991 and Head of the School of Social Work since 1997. She is a qualified and registered social worker with experience over a period of 16 years as a practitioner and manager, and has worked with children and families, people with mental health problems and older people.
Her research and teaching interests are in interprofessional practice, learning and teaching (with reference to child care and older people), child care policy, decision making, and power and authority in professional practice. She is currently the Principal Investigator for a Department for Children, Schools and Families and Department of Health funded project on conflicts of interest for GPs when safeguarding children, and has been an invited speaker to seminars and conferences in Japan, Finland, Russia and South Korea on social care for older people.
In January 2009 Hilary was elected Chair of the Joint University Council Social Work Education Committee (JUC SWEC), whose remit is to represent social work education nationally, having been since 2004, Chair of the Learning and Teaching Committee. She is currently also Chair of the Surrey and Sussex Social Work Education Group, and, since May 2010, Vice-Chair of the General Social Care Council (GSCC).

The profession of social work is currently in the spotlight and is undergoing significant scrutiny and potential change in response to a national drive to improve quality standards of practice and education. As such, Hilary and her team find themselves called upon with increasing regularity to comment on social work news and developments of the day.
Most recently Hilary has presented evidence to the House of Commons Select Committee (June 2009) on social work training for professionals working with children and families, met with Baroness Delyth Morgan, Minister for Children, Schools and Families, and represented universities offering social work education on the Key Partners Group to the government set up Social Work Taskforce.
