Course director Stephanie Morgan talks about the benefits of undertaking the MSC in Leadership and Management in Health:

The health reforms taking place within the NHS are creating new and challenging environments requiring greater investment in managerial capability combined with leadership skills. This new course will provide practitioners in the field with the skills and knowledge to meet the challenges of today and of the future. The course is designed to meet the needs of those working in the health and social care services in the public, private and voluntary sectors in the UK, as well to health professionals from abroad.

The MSc uses the evidence base drawn from the latest research and practice in health sector leadership and management, combined with the practical application of new knowledge and skills to work-based situations. The flexible modular programme is managed and taught by Kingston University Business School, in partnership with The School of Management, Royal Holloway, University of London, and St George's Medical School. It also draws on a wide network of visiting professors and consultants, who are engaged in practice.

There will be an induction programme introducing you to the modules and the aims of the course, and giving guidance on the approach to study. The programme starts with a personal assessment, using the leading edge Saville Consultancy Wave TM. This assesses personal leadership strengths and identifies areas for development.

You will then go on to study the functional aspects of healthcare management: leadership and management of people, delivering quality, finance and marketing in the health care industry, information management and the management of change.

You will then have the choice of studying healthcare in an international context, or undertaking a project based on your own work, or selecting a module relating to an aspect of professional development.

Finally, for those taking the MSc, you will complete a Research Methods module and a Dissertation. Professional and leadership development activities will take place throughout the course, and there will be many opportunities for updating and broadening knowledge through attending events arranged by the SWAN partners and ILMH.
