Choose Kingston's Approved Mental Health Professional Training (PgCert in Professional Mental Health Studies)
Our new Approved Mental Health Professional (AMHP) training course is approved by the General Social Care Council (GSCC). This means that:
- successful candidates from social work, nursing, occupational therapy and psychology are eligible to be appointed as Approved Mental Health Professionals; and
- successful candidates from social work also meet the requirements for Higher Specialist and Advanced Award training.
The GSCC requires AMHP training to be at masters level. Kingston University has considerable experience of mental health training at this level, as we previously offered Approved Social Worker training at masters level from 2002.
What will you study?
This new training course has been developed in consultation with mental health service users and carers, together with local employers. Key themes which run through the training course include the importance of:
- the voices of service users and carers;
- developing a social model of understanding;
- using research findings to enhance practice;
- integrating theory with practice; and
- working with professionals with different models of understanding.
Many of our staff in the Faculty of Health and Social Care Sciences are research active, often in partnership with NHS Trusts. This ensures they are in touch with the latest thinking and bring best practice to your studies.
