About this course

Why choose this course?

This foundation degree is designed to give an introduction to pharmacy, chemistry and the pharmaceutical sciences. There is a strong practical element within the course, which will develop your laboratory techniques. You will also be required to undertake a work placement, which will provide valuable vocational experience and open up new employment opportunities. In addition, students who successfully complete the course can extend their studies for a further year and top-up their qualification to a BSc in Pharmaceutical and Chemical Sciences.

The Pharmaceutical and Chemical Sciences FdSc has been accredited by the Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain to allow graduates of the programme direct entry into the second year of the MPharm Pharmacy programme, subject to study of the appropriate option modules and level of academic attainment.

The programme is jointly taught by Kingston University and Merton College, drawing on the strengths of each institution.

What will you study?

The first year consists of core modules, which cover each of the main subject areas. The second year includes a selection of optional modules, allowing you to specialise in areas of interest.

We emphasise the vocational application of the taught material throughout the course. As such, students must spend at least one day a week in a related workplace. This may be a community pharmacy or a pharmaceutical company, for example, and can be paid or voluntary work. We will help you to find a suitable placement if you do not already have one when taking up an offer.
