The Applied Social Research Methods MSc provides students with a thorough grounding in the theoretical and practical application of social research methods. It provides training in both qualitative and quantitative methods drawing on the wide range of expertise and research experience at Kingston.

The course is designed to appeal to students who wish to enter social research based jobs and for those who would like to further their skills and continue their professional development. It also provides an excellent grounding for students who wish to follow an academic career in the social sciences, and particularly those who would like to move on to doctoral research. 

What will you study?

The course has a strong practical focus and students have opportunities to develop and apply their skills critically to social problems, contemporary issues, areas of personal interest and work-based questions.

Alongside practical methods of data collection and analysis, the course incorporates epistemological debates, project management skills, training in research technologies, and a concern for policy-related research and good ethical practice.

The course consists of:

  • seven core modules;
  • one specialism module chosen from a range of options; and
  • a dissertation.
