Architecture: Thinking Building MA: Research areas

Current research in this subject

The MA Architecture: Thinking Building provides the intellectual basis for the development of further research into the fields of history, philosophy and the reflective practice of architecture in our School.

The course aims to situate architecture in the historical and cultural framework necessary for its full understanding, and to reconcile the tension between practice and theoretical investigations. It also aims to be a forum for debating contemporary architectural issues and rethinking the nature of architectural research.

Current areas of research interest include, but are not limited to:

  • Practice-based design research
  • Typology and identity in contemporary architectural practice
  • The interface of art and architectural practice
  • Photography, architecture and urbanism
  • Continental philosophies and architecture
  • The modern project
  • Medieval building and the city
  • Time and movement in architecture

We welcome original and innovative proposals in any of these or related areas, at postgraduate and doctoral level.

For more details on specific staff research and outcomes, please see the staff profiles on the Faculty website.
