Classical Theatre MA: Links with business and industry

How we work with industry partners

All of our drama MA courses are taught at the Rose Theatre Kingston, giving students an insight into the day-to-day running of an important producing theatre with an exciting programme of performances and related events. You will regularly come into contact with the Rose creative team and the visiting companies, both formally and informally.

Each MA course actively involves theatre professionals from the Rose and beyond in its teaching programme. Last year's Classical Theatre MA students performed in a number of Rose Theatre productions, including Judi Dench's A Midsummer Night's Dream in which they were directed by Sir Peter Hall, and Stephen Unwin's production of Strindberg's Miss Julie. The 2010 Projects module had students working with Rose associate director Jamie Harper (2006 James Menzies-Kitchin Directors' Award winner), the Moon Fool company and on a staff-led research project with Croatian dramaturg Marin Blazevic.

The Practice/Research series of workshops and talks (Wednesdays 2.00pm–4.00pm during semester time) features a range of 'industry' professionals and theatre/ performance scholars. Recent guests include Lyn Gardner (The Guardian theatre critic), Sam Walters (artistic director of The Orange Tree), Louise Blackwell (Fuel production company), Stewart Lee (comedian and creator of Jerry Springer: the Opera), Mitch Michelson (Circus Space) and Greta Mendes (Notting Hill Carnival).

The MA courses culminate in public performances of students' work at the Rose Theatre studio, which act as 'showcases' of your talents, as well as a celebration of your achievement. Industry professionals – literary managers, producers, theatrical agents – are invited to attend these performances.
