Creative Industries & the Creative Economy Masters (MA): Events and lectures

Competitions and events

Events are an integral and exciting part of this course. These include:

  • a start-up weekend at the beginning of the course;
  • taking part in a ‘Hackathon', where you will learn to solve problems creatively in partnership with local charities;
  • field trips to see small and medium-sized businesses;
  • 'Dragons' Den' events where students pitch their ideas to real investors; and
  • 'Celebrate Enterprise' in which student teams demonstrate their innovations and business ideas to the general public.

Students on this course have had visits from a wide range of industry experts including David Cameron's Enterprise Adviser Lord Young.

Extra activities for this course

Recent events include:

  • Specialist seminars – such as "Trust me, I am an entrepreneur" with Dr. Olga Kalinowska-Beszczynska and "Self-employment: Rags to Riches or Riches to Riches?" with RSA Associate Director, Economy, Enterprise and Manufacturing, Benedict Dellot.
  • Film screenings – such as "This Changes Everything".
  • Competitions – such as Bright Ideas Competition, including ideas development events and workshops.
  • Visits to cultural and creative industries events in London – such as the DIGICAL Show – iMakr UK, Frieze Art Fair and London Design Festival.
  • Visits to Fab Lab London, Google Campus and TrueStart.

The University's Entrepreneurship Centre hosts The Entrepreneurship Experience, which invites experienced entrepreneurs to share their knowledge and insights of entrepreneurial ventures from a variety of industry backgrounds. This series includes a regular focus on entrepreneurs from the creative industries.
