Early Years Teacher Initial Teacher Training (ITT): Entry requirements

What you need to apply for this course

Trainees must prove that they meet all the following entry requirements before the start of the programme. All overseas qualifications must be accompanied by NARIC equivalence.

  • A good honours degree in any subject.
  • GCSE (A–C): English Language, Mathematics and Science.
  • Trainees must be employed in an appropriate early years setting for at least 16 hours per week.
  • Trainees must be working at settings that deliver the Early Years Foundation Stage in order to be funded.
  • Sufficient employed experience, knowledge and understanding of early years.

Please note: equivalency tests are not accepted. If you don't have GCSE English Language, Mathematics or Science, you must obtain either GCSEs or IGCSEs in these subjects and will need to show on your application that you will obtain these qualifications before the course begins in September.

All trainees must be UK based and have the right work and study in the UK for at least the duration of their pathway.

All candidates will attend an interview day, which will include a group activity, maths and English test and an individual interview with one of the course team.

Skills tests

Applicants starting initial teacher training courses from September 2013 need to pass the Literacy and Numeracy Skills tests before starting their course to ensure they can be recommended for the award of Early Years Teacher Status (EYTS).

You may book your skills tests as soon as you have made an application. Applicants who have already passed their skills tests at the time of interview will be looked upon favourably. Find out more.
