Doctor of Education EdD: Course features

What this course offers you

If you choose to study this course, here are some of the things you can expect from the course and how it will benefit you.

  • This course is ideal if you want to investigate an area of current professional practice in education or training. It is comparable to a PhD in terms of scale and rigour, but aimed at busy professionals.
  • Taught modules cover professional issues and methodologies relevant to researching professional practice. These contextualise the processes of work-based learning and help you develop an advanced doctoral level understanding of reflective practice and research.
  • We offer the EdD in collaboration with Roehampton University. This allows us to offer a range of knowledge extending from early childhood to public sector management (read more in the Partner institution section). You enrol with one institution (usually the one with expertise most closely related to your anticipated research interests) with access to appropriate resources at both.
  • You also benefit from nationally-recognised expertise in research methods training.
  • Teaching staff are professional practitioners or research-active, which keeps your learning cutting-edge.
  • Our student-centred approach to learning means you benefit from flexible study options. Teaching formats include:
    • intensive weekend sessions;
    • small group tutorial sessions;
    • one-to-one supervision; and
    • e-learning support.
  • We expect you to study part-time for five years to complete the EdD but, where appropriate, you may be able to extend or reduce this time.
  • The School of Education at Kingston University is consistently rated among the top education departments in the country by the Guardian UK university league tables.
  • We design our courses in collaboration with local authorities, schools, colleges and other educational organisations. This ensures you will keep up to date with the latest developments and initiatives.
