Staff teaching on this course

Dr Sergio Velastin

Dr Sergio VelastinTitle: Course director for Embedded Systems MSc
Email: sergio.velastin@kingston.ac.uk

Dr Sergio Velastin is the course director for the Embedded Systems MSc and director of the University's Digital Imaging Research Centre, one of the biggest groups of its type in the UK and Europe.

Staff here conduct research into the processing of images and video for a range of applications including visual surveillance (CCTV), medical imaging and intelligent spaces.  In most applications it is desirable to demonstrate results in real-time – Sergio therefore has a special interest in embedded systems especially for the processing, transmission and display of digital media.

Sergio was involved in the development and launch of the Embedded Systems MSc and worked in close consultation with industrial partners such as NXP Semiconductors, BAe Systems, BT and Kane Computing.

Message from Sergio Velastin

"I conceived and direct the Embedded Systems MSc as I believe there are a wealth of opportunities in dedicated (or 'embedded') devices that combine hardware and software typically with sophisticated user interfaces, communications capabilities, sensing and so on. One only needs to look at the current generation of mobile phones to see the need to have people with experience and background on how to make best use of limited computing resources and on how software needs to interact with the real world.

I am looking forward to meeting you at Kingston. Meanwhile, if you have any specific questions about the course, please get in touch.
