Employment Law Masters (LLM): What our students say

Student profiles

Don't just take our word for it – here's what students say about what it's like to study at Kingston University.

Diana Fenton

Diana Fenton: "Kingston offered me the chance to study for an excellent vocational qualification and this in turn has enabled me to run a successful and fulfilling business."

Course: Employment Law LLM

"I had worked as a management consultant for many years specialising in the field of management and personal development. I wanted to extend my expertise so that I could also provide advice about the full range of human resources (HR) and employment matters.

I decided on Kingston to be my university of choice as it was one of a small number of universities that offered an LLM in Employment Law and it is near where I live in Epsom. The course was also designed to be attended around full-time working commitments as the lectures were scheduled in the evening. Since finishing my degree, my career consists of running a successful business with my husband offering a wide range of clients outsourced HR and employment law advice together with management consultancy for developing their people and their organisations. It is essential in order to do this that we both have an outstanding knowledge of employment law.

My husband also studied Employment Law LLM with Kingston. The degree has affected my life as there is a tremendous sense of achievement and freedom in running one's own business and I really enjoy giving advice on the myriad of employment law issues that are presented to us each day. It seems to me that employment law sits at the centre of all the human issues that face organisations today. I also love being involved with so many different organisations and their staff. Kingston offered me the chance to study for an excellent vocational qualification and this in turn has enabled me to run a successful and fulfilling business."

Keith Howell-Jones: "The staff on the course are completely in tune with the needs of the profession"

Course: Business Law LLM
Current position: Solicitor, Howell-Jones Partnership

"The Business Law LLM has been a tremendous opportunity for me to continue compulsory professional development in my personal fields of practice, whilst bringing real benefits to my firm. Howell-Jones Partnership has a good record of providing exemplary service to both commercial and private clients in a wide variety of areas of law. The practice is thoroughly progressive and innovative, and therefore regards the continuing education and training of all who work in it as paramount in the pursuit of excellence.

"Exposure to the innovative and practical course at Kingston has allowed me to see new opportunities in the way we should manage and develop our practice. It has allowed me time to reflect and consider my own fields of interest and expertise in a very pleasant and relaxing environment. I have really enjoyed the convivial company of my fellow students and as a bonus I made a host of friends and learned a lot from them too.

"It has been a very pleasant experience to return to studying and to the collegiate environment at Kingston Law School. Whilst I enjoyed the usual CPD courses, the LLM has given me that extra time to consider issues of law which can sometimes be overtaken by the demands of business life. The staff on the course are completely in tune with the needs of the profession and have expertise in practice themselves to draw upon. Many are practising solicitors or barristers, and some have part-time judicial appointments.

"My professional colleagues at Howell-Jones Partnership all agree that they have benefited from the highly relevant academic work I have covered. In fact, the most surprising gain was to see the management team galvanised by my development plan for the firm. This was based on the assignment I did after a brilliant module on practice management with a most stimulating lecturer from the Business School. We might see improved profits from our six offices yet!"

Shelagh Slade

Shelagh Slade: "Kingston Law School has a practical and also very supportive approach"

Course: Employment Law LLM
Current position:
principal legal adviser, HR at QinetiQ

"The legal knowledge gained from the LLM has filled the gaps in my employment law knowledge providing me with the tools to work out legal solutions with greater accuracy and speed for my business clients. I find that I can assimilate new cases much quicker having in-depth knowledge of the underlying legal principles gained from studying on the course.

The legal modules are closely reflective of real day-to-day legal practice and I am able to directly engage my knowledge and education in providing advice to clients.

I found the mix of ages and background provided me with new perspectives on the law and on approaching legal problems. I enjoyed the teaching seminars and appreciated the flexibility of the lecturers in finding a format and style of lecture that worked for each stage of the course.

As an experienced lawyer the LLM has allowed me to establish a connection with young law students and provided me with a perspective on the challenges faced at the outset of their legal careers. This has broadened my knowledge of the type of support required by the legal interns at work.

The experience of being lectured has informed my training style at work. Kingston Law School has a practical and also very supportive approach. My experience of the lecturers is that they take the teaching aspect of their roles very seriously and will 'go the extra mile' to meet the needs of students."

Robert Horne: "The LLM gave me a tremendous breadth of legal knowledge to draw upon"

Course: Dispute Resolution LLM
Current position: solicitor at Theodore Goddard

"Commercial clients can be very demanding. Achieving results for such clients requires an understanding of the range of techniques available to resolve any particular dispute. As no two disputes are the same, there is no magic formula and a broad-based but in-depth knowledge is needed. To achieve this I spent some time looking at options to widen my knowledge and became a member of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators. I also found that Kingston was starting an LLM course ideally suited to my needs.

"The staff had a wide array of professional and practising experience, were enthusiastic and committed to helping us to get the most from the course. They appreciated that many of us had full time careers which our studies had to fit around. The reliance on coursework rather than exams made this possible and, I believe, allowed a far more detailed examination of the topics to be undertaken in a way which will not be forgotten.

"My work is all about looking at commercial issues from more than one side. The LLM gave me a tremendous breadth of legal knowledge to draw upon, as well as increasing my expertise in the practical issues of concern to my clients and those with whom they are in dispute. It has also enabled me to be elected as a Fellow of the Institute of Advanced Legal Studies. The understanding I gained on the LLM has undoubtedly boosted my value to the firm and to its clients and consequently to my career development."

Marsha Single: "I just wish I had done it earlier!"

Course: General Law LLM

"I've had such a good experience doing my postgraduate degree at Kingston that I just wish I had done it earlier! Coming to England (from Trinidad) for the first time since I was a tiny child was a daunting prospect, but I've found everyone so helpful and encouraging that I really didn't need to worry.

"I chose the General LLM in order to take advantage of the wide choice of options. In particular I've discovered a real interest in family mediation. My previous employers in Trinidad have shown much interest in taking me back after the LLM course, and at the moment I'm planning to take the Bar Vocational Course in London and then returning to Trinidad to complete my professional qualification. I'm now determined to make a career using the experience and knowledge I've gained from the course, which has equipped me to offer either a large or small practice some very valuable skills.

"In addition to the academic side of life, I've found the chance to meet a cosmopolitan range of fellow students on the course so enjoyable. The University was able to find me terrific accommodation, and I've been very happy with a landlady to look after me and help me to settle in. I'm sure that the whole adventure, together with the excellent courses offered, will make the experience one I'll always remember."
