Choose Kingston's European Real Estate (Immobilia) MSc
If you are interested in joining the property profession, either in the UK or in continental Europe, this intensive course of study is ideal. It will provide you with a challenging opportunity to study how land and property work within a European context. If you have a high-level knowledge of a second European language, you will also have the chance to develop your skills in the technical area of property.
The course is accredited by Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS).
What will you study?
You will study subjects related to the core surveying curriculum and will gain an understanding of how land and property work, including planning, investment, development and valuations. You will also study property law and European law, as well as looking at issues of sustainability and the environment.
If you are proficient in another European language - French, German, Italian or Spanish - you have the option to carry out a study of and research into technical property matters in a second language.
Many of the staff in the Faculty of Art, Design and Architecture are research active. This ensures they are in touch with the latest thinking and bring best practice to your studies.

European Development Economics
The commercial property markets in Europe operate within a range of differing and complex economic and regulatory frameworks including land use planning laws. This module helps students to understand and apply economic principles and theories to the European property markets. It develops in students a knowledge of the main institutional frameworks within which real estate development takes place. Through lectures, seminars and self-guided study, students will develop a critical appreciation of the principles and processes of European town and country planning. They will also be introduced to the processes of economic analysis, development appraisals and of property development funding techniques. Assessment is by a synoptic paper and an examination.

European project
One of the highlights of the programme is a week long field trip to a major European city. This normally takes place at the end of the Spring term and forms the central focus for a major synoptic project.
The project will draw on several aspects of the course but will have a major investment and development aspect. Part of the project will require you to work in teams, analyse a simulated market situation and prepare a client report. The module will also include an element of individual analytical work.

European Real Estate Investment Practice
The property investment market now operates across national boundaries. However, despite much convergence, major differences still exist, even within Europe.
This module helps you develop a critical knowledge of the way in which the markets operate, particularly in terms of leasing, valuation and investment practice.
We teach the course in two short blocks. Written and web-based materials support your learning.
Assessment is by critical essay and assessed online forum discussion.

module teaches the application of
business and corporate strategic
management applied to the built
environment professions including the
application of management theories to
the global market place and the emergent
related discipline of knowledge
management. The module also develops
in students a critical application of the
role of the professional, both as
consultant and in-house advisor and it
provides a critical examination of
professional conduct and ethics.
Assessment is by a synoptic paper and a
practical exercise. This module is
available as a language option for
appropriately qualified students.

- Real Estate Investment and Appraisal Principles

Real Estate Investment and Appraisal Principles
The study of real estate investment appraisal and valuation techniques goes to the heart of the course. Students need to understand how value is calculated and this also requires an understanding of investment markets. This module provides students with a systematic knowledge of modern real valuation theory including related quantitative and IT skills. By so doing, students will develop an appreciation of the role of valuers and appraisers and of the regulatory framework within which they operate. The module is taught by lecture and seminar and IT training on Excel is included. Assessment is by a seminar paper and an examination.

Sustainable European Built Environment
This module equips the students to be critical aware of the historical and current context of sustainable development, particularly in the built and natural environments and enable them to appreciate an appropriate balance between environmental, economic and social considerations in achieving sustainable development. It also ensures that students acquire systematic understanding of the principles of construction technology and engage in critical appraisal of the theory and practice of European design and construction in the light of ever increasing environmental considerations. Delivered by lectures, seminars and self directed study the assessment is through a seminar paper and technical report on related areas.

This half module provides students with the opportunity to devise and deliver an original piece of research in open forum and thereby helps them to extend the ethos of research culture into their subsequent professional work, and to encourage continuing professional development and life-long learning. The module requires them to develop an aspect of their dissertation or master's project (as applicable) into a short conference paper and presentation and to deliver this. Assessment is of both the written paper and the oral presentation.

This double module is designed to ensure that students can produce a substantial, original body of authoritative work by engaging in both primary and secondary research at masters level. It enables them to achieve a comprehensive understanding and application of the key issues of the subject selected and aims to develop in students a commitment to research and understanding of its likely role in their future careers. Students are supported by tutorials and assessment is by a written dissertation.

- Research Concepts for the Built Environment

Research Concepts for the Built Environment
This half module introduces students to the research process and enables them to acquire a critical knowledge of the concept and theory of various research methodologies, appropriate to the built environment. It provides them with practice of conducting research via secondary sources, within their own guided choice of subject. Delivery is by a series of seminars, workshops and tutorials and assessment is through a literature review and portfolio of critical reviews.

Research Proposal for Dissertation
This module aims to provide students with practice of devising an original primary research strategy for a specific research project, appropriate to satisfying the course objectives. In so doing it ensures that they explore and critically evaluate primary research methodology and proposals by requiring them to prepare a well developed research proposal which will be preparatory to undertaking their dissertation or master's project. In preparing the proposal students are supported by workshops, seminars and tutorials.
