Film Studies MA: Research areas

Current research in this subject

Many of the staff in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences are research active. This ensures they are in touch with the latest thinking and bring best practice to your studies.

Research in film, media and drama aims to:

  • explore the expanding points of intersection between these three areas;
  • examine the new cultural forms that will emerge from them, especially in the field of digital media culture; and
  • create innovative and cross-disciplinary projects from these developments.

Research in film has a particular expertise in:

  • Spanish and East German cinema;
  • religion and film;
  • new developments in American film; and
  • the representation and spaces of cities in cinema.

Research in drama is rooted in performance and its social context. It covers carnival; melodrama; devising; black and Asian theatre; theatrical space; historical reconstruction; forms of theatrical performance; and acting. Our PhD students are researching:

  • 18th century theatre performance from a 21st century perspective; and
  • the relationship between performance and human rights.
