Geographical Information Systems (GIS) MSc programmes: Attendance and timetables

When does teaching take place?

Applied Geographical Information Systems MSc is taught partly by distance learning and partly in class. Geographical Information Systems and Science MSc is taught entirely by distance learning using our online course materials.

The University operates a two-semester system:

  • Semester 1 runs from mid-September to the end of January.
  • Semester 2 runs from the start of February to the end of April.

Modules are taught during the first 11 weeks of each semester, which are followed by examination periods.

Both courses commence in mid-September. For the Applied Geographical Information Systems MSc, precise timetables are determined by your particular programme of optional modules. A full-time student can expect to attend classes for 1.5 days per week for 22 weeks during the year. Part-time students will be required for up to one day per week for 22 weeks in each of their two years.

Whilst there are no classes for the distance learning modules for the Geographical Information Systems and Science MSc, students will be invited to attend a range of optional drop-in workshops, short intensive day courses and, where appropriate, the Kingston GIS summer school.

Distance learning

All distance learning modules are delivered using Kingston University's advanced online course management system, which supports study at your own pace. Comprehensive materials are delivered online, including reading, lectures, podcasts, assessments and support material.

Students have full support through a range of mechanisms, including email support; virtual chatrooms; skype calling; and access to staff and GIS experts throughout their course. Staff are consistently commended for their help, advice and support at all stages in the course and you can be assured that your successful learning is our top priority.
