Geographical Information Systems (GIS) MSc programmes: Entry requirements
What you need to apply for this course
The Applied Geographical Information Systems MSc and the Geographical Information Systems and Science MSc courses are open to both those fresh from their undergraduate studies and those already in employment. Both are also available in full-time mode (one year) or part-time mode (two years).
Successful applicants will be expected to have either:
- a good honours degree awarded by a British or approved overseas university. Normally the degree level should be at second class honours level or higher and contain one or more aspects from the GIS, Geographical, Earth, Environmental, Computer or Biological Sciences as the major field(s) of study; or
- for those without formal undergraduate qualifications, be able to demonstrate extensive work experience or career development in the field of GIS.
All applicants will be expected to show strong ability and motivation to work at MSc level and, crucially, a commitment to the discipline of GI Science and Systems.
The application process
Early applications are advised and you will also be required to supply good references. You may be called for interview.
You will be offered the opportunity of visiting the University on one of our postgraduate open days. You can also arrange to meet with the course director to discuss your needs and aspirations should you wish.
International students
All non-UK applicants must meet our English language requirements. For this course it is Academic IELTS of 6.5 overall with 6.5 in Writing and 5.5 in Reading, Listening and Speaking.
Please make sure you read our full guidance about English language requirements, which includes details of other qualifications we'll consider.
Applicants who do not meet the English language requirements may be eligible to join our pre-sessional English language course.
Applicants from one of the recognised Majority English Speaking Countries (MESCs) do not need to meet these requirements.
We encourage applications from overseas students for the distance-learning Geographical Information Systems and Science MSc. However, instruction is in English so students will still be required to have the English language qualifications above.
