Geographical Information Systems (GIS) MSc programmes: GIS fieldwork
The benefits of fieldwork
Fieldwork is an important part of our GIS teaching because it:
- deepens your understanding through experience;
- shows you how GIS technology is used in the real world; and
- familiarises you with a range of techniques to gather field data (including traditional methods, as well as global positioning systems (GPS) and related mobile technologies).
The optional Mobile GIS module is available to both MSc programmes and takes place in Malta, normally in early June. It provides an intensive programme of land and offshore fieldwork based GIS, including a visit to the Maltese Environment and Planning Authority (MEPA) to look at the way the Maltese map and plan on the island using GIS. MEPA staff also take part in surveying activities later in the trip with us.
Exercises also include local surveying; land use surveying and assessment; topographic mapping using GPS; and offshore bathymetric mapping – as well as a day off cruising the Mediterranean! Visits to many of Malta's most important sights are included in the itinerary and students have the opportunity to use state of the art equipment in a range of contexts.
In addition to the work undertaken, it represents an excellent opportunity for all MSc students to get together and share experiences alongside the GIS staff. It provides a focal point for distance learning students in particular. We recognise that this module will not suit everyone's needs so it is available as an additional cost.
