Geographical Information Systems (GIS) MSc programmes: Learning support
How we can support you
You will have access to a personal tutorial system during your time at Kingston. You will also be able to use the University's Careers Service and counselling service.
Personal training plans
We offer all students training sessions when they arrive at Kingston University, covering:
- project management;
- communication skills; and
- information research and retrieval.
The aim is to give you the chance to improve your study, research and life skills.
Electronic support
During the course, you will have access to:
- your own copy of major GIS software; and
- ESRI's Virtual Campus – which provides web-based materials for GIS self-study, including podcasts, web workshops and live presentations;
- StudySpace – our online learning management system; and
- My – the student intranet.
StudySpace
StudySpace is a web-based learning management system that provides access to a host of information and material to assist with your studies. It is the main mechanism used to deliver the materials and provide support for the distance learning Geographical Information Systems and Science MSc.
Support materials include:
- subject guides;
- lecture notes;
- presentations;
- podcasts of lectures and video clips;
- online assessment and feedback; and
- links to valuable resources and other datasets.
Other useful features are online discussion forums (bulletin boards), a virtual classroom and a drop box (for online submission of coursework), all of which are used routinely in GIS modules. One of the main benefits of StudySpace is that it is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week using any computer with an internet connection, which means you always have access to your course materials.
My Kingston
The Kingston University student intranet provides a fast, easy way to find information online. It provides everything you need to know about student life at Kingston including direct links to StudySpace, StudentHUB, OSIS and the iCat library search facility.
Study resources
You will be able to join professional organisations and receive academic journals at reduced rates.
The Graduate Centres
All postgraduate students at Kingston have access to the Graduate Centres, dedicated spaces for graduate students. These are ideal for private study or holding meetings. Find out more in the Facilities section.
