About the faculty and staff



FADA facultyThe Faculty of Art, Design and Architecture teaches this course. The Faculty has its roots in the studio-based approach of Britain's art school system (the original School of Art was founded in the 1890s).

Today, most of your learning still takes place in our specialist studios. Each subject area has its own fully-equipped studio, where you take part in classes, tutorials and critical reviews with fellow students. This strong studio culture also ensures regular interaction between students and tutors.

Our industry connections mean we provide unique study opportunities, such as:

  • 'live' projects, site visits and placements in prestigious companies or institutions
  • project work and workshops with visiting lecturers and industry specialists

Where is the Faculty based? Most students in the Faculty are based at the University's Knights Park campus, with surveying courses based at Penrhyn Road. Our well-equipped facilities offer a modern study environment so that you graduate with cutting-edge skills and knowledge.

Sarah Sayce

Title: Head of School

Sarah SayceSarah became an academic after several years in practice as a Chartered Surveyor. Now Head of School, she is also a leading published academic and for many years has specialised in the field of leisure property and more recently sustainable property. She has written several books and numerous conference and journal papers, plus sits on three journal editorial boards.

Sarah chairs the School's Centre for Excellence in Teaching and Learning – C-SCAIPE (Centre for Sustainable Communities Achieved through Integrated Professional Education). She also retains contact with the RICS by acting as an APC assessor and as an elected member of the RICS International Governing Council.


Nigel Dubben

Title: Postgraduate course director

In a property career which started in 1972, Nigel has been a director of Grosvenor Waterside plc (specialising in waterfront development); a director of Hall Pain and Foster Ltd (now part of Atis Real); and a partner in Conspectus Project Management.

He is the co-author of Property Portfolio Management (Routledge), and is currently writing Property Partnerships (to be published by Blackwell). Nigel also lectures at conferences, is an RICS APC assessor, and has completed a series of papers in the field of compulsory purchase and compensation.


Timothy Eccles

Title: Senior lecturer

Timothy is a Chartered Surveyor, a Chartered Builder and a corporate Building Engineer, specialising in teaching management issues concerning the property industry and profession. His research interests are in professionalism within the English building industry, including technical issues between professions (such as between accounting and valuation), education and wider sociological principles.

He is co-author of Property and Construction Economics (International Thomson) and is currently co-writing Real Estate Accounting (Blackwell). Recent published papers include 'International Accounting Standards: A Paradigm Shift for Corporate Real Estate?' (Journal of Corporate Real Estate, 2002) and 'Accounting Practice in the Post-Enron Era: The Implications for Financial Statements in the Property Industry' (Briefings in Real Estate Finance, 2003).


Tim Bennett

Title: Principal lecturer

After qualifying as a Chartered Quantity Surveyor, Tim spent a number of years in practice working within both the corporate sector and private consultancy where he quickly rose to become a partner. He entered academia some 15 years ago and has specialised in teaching consultancy, and project and business management.

His research interests lie primarily in the field of teaching and learning and he is a University Teaching Fellow in recognition of his innovative approaches to teaching and learning. Tim has also acted an RICS Assessor for the Assessment of Professional Competence.


Dr Bahram Ghiassee

Title: Senior lecturer

Bahram is a senior lecturer in the School of Surveying and Planning. As an academic lawyer, he is primarily involved in the teaching of European law, environmental law and policy, and spatial planning at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. He also lectures on sustainable development, with particular emphasis on policy, legislative and institutional frameworks at international, European and national levels.

His current research interests and publications encompass, inter alia, environmental law and policy, spatial planning, and nuclear law. He has also published extensively in scientific and technical journals.

Bahram is both a Chartered Arbitrator (MCIArb) and a Chartered Engineer (CEng). He is also an associate-member of the Royal Town Planning Institute (AMRTPI), and a member of the Nuclear Institute (MNucI), the Engineering Council UK, the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators, the UK Environmental Law Association, and the International Nuclear Law Association (Brussels).

Bahram holds academic qualifications in Engineering (BS, University of Washington, Seattle), Nuclear Science and Technology (MSc, PhD, DIC, Imperial College, London), MBA (Cass Business School, London) and Law (LLB, Birkbeck College, University of London; LLM, University College London) and has had appointments in academia, research, commerce, and industry – both in the UK and abroad. He is also a visiting lecturer on the Radiation and Environmental Protection MSc at the University of Surrey, where he teaches nuclear law and environmental protection (law and policy).


Amanda Lewis

Title: Director of C-SCAIPE

Amanda is a qualified architect and also holds an RICS-accredited award. She has extensive practice experience, working both in large practices and on her own account. Her current research interests include sustainability and pedagogic issues, both in relation to the built environment professions. She sits on a number of University and Faculty committees in these fields.


John Pointing

Title: Senior lecturer

John Pointing is a barrister specialising in regulatory law – food safety, health and safety, and environmental law. Before being called to the Bar in 1992, he worked as a criminologist and as the director of a national charity.

John has considerable experience in regulatory law, and of civil and criminal proceedings. His clients have included businesses and local authorities. He has also advised central government bodies, including DEFRA, the Public Health Laboratory Service and the Meat Hygiene Service, on enforcement issues, aspects of public policy as well as providing legal advice on particular cases.

For several years,he has run training programmes for senior staff, lawyers and enforcement officers in industry, local authorities and regulatory bodies. Widely published in many professional and legal journals, John co-edits the 'Mainly for Students' column in the Estates Gazette. He recently co-authored Statutory Nuisance: Law and Practice (OUP, 2002) and Food Safety Enforcement (CIEH, 2004).


Dennis Wilkinson

Dennis is a Chartered Building Surveyor and a Chartered Environmental Surveyor. He has extensive experience in both practice and in the academic field. As a past education manager for the Chartered Institute of Building, he has a very clear understanding of the needs of professional education.

Dennis lectures primarily on building design, construction and sustainability, which he puts into practice by living a carbon-zero lifestyle. Dennis combines his position at Kingston with lecturing at a number of academic institutions and at professional conferences.


Dr Silvia Gullino

Title: Lecturer

Silvia is an architect by training. She also has a European masters degree in Environmental Engineering from the Politecnico of Torino and a PhD from the Politecnico of Milano for a thesis on the experiences of sustainable urban regeneration in the UK.

The focus of her project was 'The Millennium Villages, the Sustainable Communities Initiatives and the New Labour Urban Agenda'. Recently she has undertaken visiting posts at both King's College London and the Politecnico of Milano, specialising in urban regeneration.

Silvia joins the team to teach on the spatial planning courses and brings with her a wealth of international research knowledge and experience.


Richard Cheeseman

Title: Senior lecturer

Richard is a Chartered Building Surveyor with 25 years' experience in industry, having worked within a variety of different organisations and carried out the whole range of works associated with building surveying.This expertise was extended into managing architectural and building services staff and their work in his final industrial appointment.

In 1999 Richard took up a full-time appointment as the senior lecturer in building surveying at Kingston University. Within this field his experience has allowed him to become a contributor to a variety of forums, papers and media articles.
