History (International) MA: Research areas

Research in history at Kingston covers:

• British politics since 1900;
• the history of the British empire;
• trade union and social democratic history;
• the history of ideas, including in France since the Enlightenment and in post-war British politics;
• 18th century British social, cultural and legal history;
• the French Revolution;
• Italian history;
• the history of fascism;
• women's and gender history;
• comparative history;
• 19th century German history;
• local history, including the history of London; and
• history of healthcare.

Many of our staff in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences are research active. This ensures they are in touch with the latest thinking and bring best practice to your studies.

The Centre for the Historical Record acts as a forum for debate providing a space (physical and virtual) where historians, professional and public researchers, archivists, curators, and all those who are devoted to preserving, displaying and presenting historical artefacts, can meet to share their common concerns and formulate new strategies. The Centre also provides a home for the History group's research activities.

It is currently home to several major research projects:

• The Historic Hospital Admissions Records Project (HHARP) is creating a unique resource for public and academic use, which focuses on development of British children's hospitals in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The website, at the centre of the project, provides access to databases of admissions to four children's hospitals. It also hosts a growing collection of articles about health and healthcare of children in the Victorian and Edwardian era.
• Museum Lives, being conducted in collaboration with  journalism staff at Kingston and the Natural History Museum in London, is an oral history project which reveals how life behind the scenes at the Museum has changed over the last fifty years, through a series of interviews with retired and long serving scientific staff.
• The Kingston Local History Project is a comprehensive database of census and parish records which provide insight into major aspects of Kingston's economic and social evolution during the second half of the nineteenth century.
